Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the right to contest specific decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
