This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound examination about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
