Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille on Penalties to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now won the season-opening cup on fourteen separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the net early on.

However, Marseille fired twice in the closing moments to take a surprise advantage. First, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, the Portuguese striker snatched a crucial leveler in the final seconds to send the contest into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted successfully for PSG to seal a 4-1 penalty win.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the last thirteen seasons.
