Coordinated Anglo-French Airstrike Strikes Islamic State Arms Cache in the Syrian region
British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.
UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."
Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
